1. Conspiracy Chocolate workshop

Work for your treats at a two-hour chocolate-making workshop by Conspiracy Chocolate on Sunday August 25, where you will be able to try your hands at the techniques to turn beans to bars.

Starting off with a bit of education on cacao’s history, characteristics and how cocoa beans are processed, the workshop then moves into the various steps involved, from winnowing and stone-grinding the beans to tempering and moulding chocolate.

Each participant will get to bring home four bars of their own handmade chocolate, packaged in Conspiracy Chocolate’s signature wrappers.

The Chocolate Lab, Unit A&B, 8/F, Block 2, Kingley Industrial Building, 33 Yip Kan Street, Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong. 2.30pm-4.30pm, August 25, 2023. Tickets at conspiracychocolate.com.

2. The Old Book Store

If you enjoy a cosy weekend with a good book and coffee, head to The Old Book Store in Causeway Bay, which invites customers to bring in a beloved book they no longer need and donate it in exchange for a cup of coffee. This month, the bookstore-slash-cafe continues its Haruki Murakami theme, highlighting works by the Japanese author.

3. Men-ya New Old

Cool down with the hottest noodle trend in Japan this summer: kombusui tsukemen features springy noodles to be dipped in a sea kelp broth (kombu means kelp, while sui means water in Japanese) that has a slightly sticky texture thanks to the seaweed.

It is the signature offering at Men-ya New Old, newly opened by the team behind familiar noodle joints Zagin Soba and Maru de Sankaku nearby.

5. Bamboo Bar

This new bar is bigging up baijiu with a cocktail menu infusing the famed Chinese spirit into cheeky creations across a spectrum of flavours. The “Not That Bloody Mary” is made with Guizhou-style sour fish soup, clarified tomato juice and lemon, while the “Not That Alexander” uses Langjiu baijiu with vodka, creme de cacao and evaporated milk for a rich, chocolatey drink.

The food menu highlights Sichuan cuisine, with piquant snacks such as spicy and sour lotus root, mala xia (Sichuan-style spicy shrimp) and crispy offal skewers. Currently, the bar has a buy-one-get-one-free offer on cocktails from 5pm to 10pm daily.

Any excuse to raise a glass to the arrival of Hong Kong’s newest panda babies, right?
