Nearly three dozen people were killed in a car attack on a crowd in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday, police said, releasing the death toll a full day after the incident.
In an attack authorities described as a “major malicious case”, Zhuhai police said on Tuesday night that 35 people were killed when a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan drove an SUV into a crowd outside a stadium at 7.48pm.
The victims had been exercising at the time and the car was in an area off limits to vehicles, police said.
The police did not name the victims.
More than 300 medical workers at five Zhuhai hospitals were treating the wounded, and the National Health Commission said it sent a team of 11 specialists to the city to help on Tuesday.
The attacker was stopped and taken to hospital after trying to kill himself, Zhuhai police said. He was in a coma, receiving medical treatment and “unable to be questioned by police”.
