BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department has published a holiday list for the year 2024 for degree colleges in the state. According to the list, the summer vacation will start from May 4 and continue until June 17.
The state has more than 1000 degree colleges, including government and aided colleges. It also has teacher education institutions (TEIs).Around two lakh students are continuing their studies in these colleges.
These degree colleges will have a total of 72 days of holidays in 2024. The holidays will start from New Year’s Day and end with the Christmas holiday on December 25. The list includes eight Mondays and two Saturdays, providing consecutive holidays with weekends for students and college staff.
The department will provide 38 days for the summer vacation in the coming year. It will also provide a six-day Puja holiday from October 10 to October 16. Apart from these, there are 26 single-day holidays like Republic Day and Independence Day.
Out of the 72 holidays in 2024, the government has included two local holidays in the list. The respective college principals will declare two local holidays based on local needs.
“Local holidays declared by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) are not applicable to the colleges. However, the principals may choose any two of the local holidays declared by RDCs,” said Rajata Kumar Mansingh, deputy director of the higher education department.
In a letter to the principals of the degree colleges and TEIs, the higher education department said that a common holiday list needs to be strictly followed in all these colleges functioning under the department to bring uniformity in observing holidays.
“The department said this list is provisional and subject to last-minute changes by the government,” said the official letter.
