This movie was made on the same storyline of Sholay with superstars in it. However, it failed badly at the box office. It is…
Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, is a cult classic. It is touted as the greatest Hindi film ever made. It featured Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Amjad Khan. There have been a couple of movies that have been made based on the same storyline such as Saat Hindustani, Khote Sikkay, Tu Chor Main Sipahi, etc.
In 2005, a movie titled Elaan attempted to recreate the magic of Sholay but with an International twist. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film featured a stellar cast including Rahul Khanna, Arjun Rampal, John Abraham, and Mithun Chakraborty. The plot revolved around three men uniting to take down an international mafia boss, played by Mithun Chakraborty. Despite its star-studded lineup and a hefty budget of Rs 15 crore, Elaan failed to impress audiences and became a major box-office flop.
Sholay is a timeless classic, a cinematic masterpiece so iconic that it set a benchmark nearly impossible to surpass. Elaan, despite its best efforts, struggled to step out of Sholay’s towering shadow. The 2005 film, with its star-studded cast and ambitious plot, tried to copy the essence of the classic but failed to capture the magic that made Sholay unforgettable. Its attempt to recreate a similar storyline only highlighted the comparison, making it difficult for Elaan to carve its own identity as it collected Rs 12.58 crore at the worldwide box office and Rs 7.52 crore nett in India.
Though the actors tried their best, they did not manage to portray the characters in Sholay as effectively.
