15-minute jacket potato cooking hack ‘crisps up’ skin

Jacket potatoes are a simple and easy dinner option and can be paired with lots of different flavours.

Many people enjoy their jacket potatoes with baked beans, tuna and sweetcorn, salad and melted cheese.

However, jacket potatoes can take a while to cook in the oven, with some larger potatoes taking around an hour to cook all the way through.

If you’re looking for a particularly crispy skin you may have to cook your jacket potatoes for even longer.

Many people recommend cooking jacket potatoes in an air fryer to save time but not everyone owns the popular appliance.

Now, an expert has shared a simple two-step method to reduce the cooking time of your jacket potato without compromising that golden, crispy skin.

Darren Watts, showroom development and design director at Wren Kitchens said: “Using just the oven to cook a jacket potato can take around 30-40 minutes, however, there is a trick to reduce the cooking time but still have a crispy finish.

“Preheat the oven to 200C and using a fork, prick the potato all over.

“This allows steam to escape during cooking and prevents them from bursting.

“Microwave it for five minutes and remove before rinsing the potato again and rubbing the skin with a little olive oil or melted butter.

“This step helps the skin crisp up and be full of flavour. Finally, bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes.”

Baked potato skin will likely be steaming hot when it comes out of the oven so be careful when attempting to handle it.

Enjoy your jacket potato with your filling or topping of choice. Some popular options include butter, cheese, sour cream, gravy and baked beans.
