10-hour power outage scheduled for multiple Johannesburg areas

City Power has announced that the construction of the new substation in El Dorado Park is nearing completion and will officially switch on in the coming weeks. This upgrade aims to minimize frequent power outages linked to the old infrastructure.

Emergency power supply interruptions scheduled

To facilitate the transition from the old substation to the new one, City Power will implement emergency power supply interruptions. These interruptions are scheduled for Friday, 26 July. The power outage will take place between 7:00 until 17:00.

“Relocating customers to the new substation requires emergency isolation to ensure a safe transition,” said City Power.

“The team has already energized the second transformer a week ahead of schedule, which will help us manage the transition efficiently.”

Areas that will be affected by the power outage

On Friday, 26 July, the power will be off in several areas, including:

  • Freedom Park
  • Eldorado Park ext. 2,3,4,5,6,7,8
  • Kliptown Joshco Flat
  • Eldorado Park police station
  • Klipspruit West
  • Kliptown

Residents should prepare by unplugging all household appliances to avoid damage from potential inrush currents when power is restored. City Power appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience during this essential power outage upgrade.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa cautioned South Africans against feeling too secure about the energy grid, warning that the return of load shedding remains a possibility.

“We have been working closely with independent power producers to advance their projects to the construction phase, which has significantly reduced the severity of load shedding,” he stated during his address at the budget vote for the Presidency for 2024/25.

This caution comes as South Africa have not had load shedding for almost four months straight.
