Where a South American in Hong Kong eats pasta and food that reminds her of home

Originally from Ecuador, Ximena Perez is an architect by training, works in real estate sales and also sources unique craft products including hats from her native country under her label Paarte. She spoke to Andrew Sun.

I grew up enjoying a blend of Ecuadorian and European cuisine. In Latin America, we also savour ingredients like various types of plantains, and fruits such as lulo, tamarillo and banana passion fruit. The Pacific Ocean’s cold waters also provide excellent seafood.

A family favourite lunch spot is Din Tai Fung (four locations including 68 Yee Woo Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 3160 8998). Our six-year-old daughter absolutely loves it. Our top order is the chicken xiao long bao.
A Friday night favourite with my husband is Pici (various locations including 16 St Francis Yard, Wan Chai, tel: 2755 5523). We love the atmosphere. My go-to pasta dishes are cacio e pepe and the tagliolini truffle.

For dinner, Lai Ching Heen (G/F, Regent Hong Kong, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2313 2313) offers Cantonese cuisine with fresh and quality ingredients.
