The ultimate speedrunning event of the summertime, Summer Games Done Quick, kicks off today. This annual charity event put on by Games Done Quick starts today June 26 and will run through next Sunday, July 3. For those who aren’t familiar, across this upcoming week gamers will play through games going for the fastest times possible, all the while raising money for a great cause.
SGDQ has always been a highly anticipated time of the year for me to see astonishing gaming skills on display. There’s a thrill like no other found in watching someone fly through some of your favorite games with such mastery. The roster of games ran spans from classics like Castlevania and Legend of Zelda all the way to modern releases such as the immensely popular Elden Ring. Today, you can check out runs of Shadow of the Colossus, Mass Effect, Sypro the Dragon and many others. You can check out the full schedule here.
The event is hosted in order to support the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) foundation. This humanitarian organization is active in over 70 countries and over 90% of their income comes from donations. Last year’s event raised $2,938,714.59 total for the organization. To drive up donations, different incentives are offered around each game ranging from picking character names to setting more difficult objectives for the speed-runners to complete.
