Shortcuts are wrong: Gadkari criticises parties for ‘giving away’ money to people, calls out nepotism in politics

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday criticised political parties for ‘giving away’ money to Indians in the guise of free electricity and subsidies on gas cylinders.

Speaking at the News18 India Chaupal event in New Delhi, Gadkari said that in order for India to become ‘aatmanirbhar’, political parties must start thinking long term instead of taking the short-term route.

“Just like you (media houses) compete, we (political parties) compete too. However, we all must stop and think if it is really in the best interest of India and its citizens to get benefits like free electricity and subsidised gas cylinders,” Gadkari said.

He further stated that if India truly wants to become a developed nation, it is cathartic for the nation to stand on its own two feet, instead of depending on promises that can only help the nation temporarily.

“We must envision India as a society that is strong financially and one that does not depend on instant gratifications thrown their way, in any form,” said Gadkari.

‘Nepotism wrong in politics’

On nepotism in politics, Gadkari has some strong remarks to make. He called out politicians who look to find opportunities in politics for their children, and claimed that his family doesn’t ask for benefits that come with his ministerial position. “I do not need such benefits because my children and wife never ask for a ticket to stand in elections. I feel it is wrong when a person from a political background looks to benefit from their position of influence to enter the field,” Gadkari said. The Union Minister explained that there are many individuals good enough to serve the nation as politicians and that fair chances must be given to those aspiring to take India to a better position.

“Nepotism is wrong, but if someone is truly capable, they must rise through the ranks. There are many citizens who have the calability to serve this nation by entering politics, they should be given equal opportunities,” Gadkari stated.

‘Wrong to accuse CM Yogi of targeting people’

When asked about the Supreme Court of India’s recent directive, asking the government to stop bulldozing homes, specifically in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Gadkari defended CM Yogi Adityanath.

The Union Minister of Road and Transport claimed that Adityanath has been unbiased when it comes to delivering justice in any form.

He also said that houses demolised in the state over the years have not been taken down with the motive of targeting any community.

“I have known Yogi ji for years, and have been keeping a track of his work in his state. I can tell you that he has not seen a person’s caste, religion or background before taking action against any sort of encroached areas or houses in his state,” Gadkari said.
