Popular yet costly city break costs tourists £550 per day to visit | Travel News | Travel

The student travel company Rustic Pathways has shared a list of the most popular cities to travel to for a short break, and how much they typically cost to visit.

The study looked into the cities most tourists head to for short breaks, in addition to the typical cost of accommodation, transport and meals out.

Shayne Fitz-Coy, CEO of Rustic Pathways, noted that, with a bit of research and planning, city breaks can be an incredibly affordable way to see some of the world’s most famous locations.

He explained: “With the cost of living having risen dramatically over recent years for many countries, many will still want a holiday abroad, but will be looking to spend less than they usually would.

“A short-haul city break is a great option for potential holidaymakers who want to visit new places but spend a bit less. This study provides a clear insight into the cities that people want to visit, with Europe dominating, and which of these cities are not going to break the bank.”

New York

According to Rustic Pathways’ study, New York is the most popular city break destination, with 56.7 million people visiting the Big Apple in 2022 alone.

Perhaps due to its popularity, the American city is also incredibly expensive for tourists to take a break in, with the company estimating a typical cost of £549.60 for a one-night stay.

Whilst the average hotel price of £280 per night is the highest on the list, the estimated spend of £114 on entertainment helps to make it an incredibly expensive destination.

Paris

Another popular yet expensive place to go on a city break is Paris, with 30 million taking a trip to the French capital during 2023.

Overall, a night’s stay in the City of Love costs tourists an average of £445.60 per night, with the hotel stay priced at £261.60 alone.

Whilst entertainment is usually considerably cheaper than New York, at £67.20, the typical cost of a meal out stands at a further £36.
