After launching in February 2022, the National Administration Traffic Information System (Natis) online platform has become the most popular and one of the most cost-effective licence disc renewal services in South Africa.
According to MyBroadband, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed in early June 2024 that the platform had surpassed two million licence disc renewal transactions.
By comparison, First National Bank (FNB’s) service, available exclusively to its customers, has processed approximately 465 000 licence disc renewals since July 2023.
Sizwekazi Mdingi, FNB’s head of external communications and public relations, noted, “FNB customers have had the ability to renew their car licences online and address other car maintenance needs through nav» Car on the mobile app since November 2016.”
“Customer uptake of licence disc renewal transactions with FNB has been encouraging.”
Mdingi added that these transactions have been growing at a rate of over 71% year-on-year.
What about renewing licence discs through the Post Office?
The number of licence disc renewal transactions passed through the South African Post Office’s SapoMVL system could not be confirmed at time of publication.
Notably, SapoMVL is the next most affordable option after FNB and Natis Online.
The RTMC introduced the Natis online platform to offer South African motorists a convenient way to renew their vehicle registrations and pay without the need to visit a Department of Transport’s Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).
The platform also provides other services, such as driver’s licence card renewals.
“We are making it easy for all South Africans to conduct this business in the comfort of their homes, without having to queue at the DLTCs,” said RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi.
Motorists using the platform can pay for renewals via credit card, debit card, or EFT.
Driver’s licence renewals will be paid for via credit card, while there will also be the option to collect the card from a DLTC or have it home delivered, Msibi added.
What are the cheapest options?
Initially, Natis Online was the most affordable option for vehicle registration renewals, charging only the renewal cost and a R99 delivery fee if the disc is delivered.
Currently, FNB offers the cheapest option for renewing a single vehicle’s registration. Originally priced at R199 per renewal, FNB reduced the fee to R99 in 2023 and further to a promotional price of R69 per vehicle renewal in March 2024.
This promotion, initially set to expire on 30 June 2024, has been extended until December 2024.
