Abhilash Thapliyal in an exclusive interview with India.com revealed that how his personality was misjudged after portraying SK Jha in aspirants.
Abhilash Thapliyal is one such name which is gaining significant recognition in the Bollywood industry. Recently, Thapliyal wooed his fans with his statement performance in Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan. Known for his versatile acting skills, charismatic screen presence, and sharp wit, Thapliyal has successfully carved a niche for himself. For over six years, Abhilash has played diverse roles, but the character which brought him all the success was Shwetketu aka SK Jha, from the web series Aspirants. While both the seasons of the series turned out to be a massive hit, Abhilash has revealed that for the longest time, people misjudged his personality to be as same as SK Jha. In an exclusive interview with india.com, Thapliyal revealed that he had to turn down several projects due to the same reason.
When Abhilash was asked, after doing Aspirants, what difference he noticed in terms of getting projects, the actor said, “People have started seeing me as an intense and versatile actor. After ‘Aspirants,’ I got ‘Faadu,’ where I played an addict and a drunkard. Then I did a film called ‘Blurr,’ where I portrayed a psycho killer. Next, I explored a completely different space in ‘Kendy.’ I believe I wouldn’t have gotten these roles if people didn’t recognise my calibre. In this industry, it’s important for all of us to have that reference point where people can say, ‘Yes, he played that role well.’”
He further added, “The issue I faced with SK was that I am not like the character. If you talk to some actors, sometimes their characters and their real selves are quite similar, and there is no difference in their language and mannerisms. But when you talk to me and then watch SK in ‘Aspirants,’ you can see that our characters are very different. Everyone thought that I was like SK, and I was getting a lot of similar offers where the character was a simple guy from Bihar preparing for or teaching for UPSC exams. I had to tell them that I’m not that guy. I just played the character.”
He concluded by saying, “It happens so often that there are many actors you see on OTT platforms, in films, or web series, and when you meet them, they are just like their characters. They speak the same way their characters do. But that’s not the case with me. So, I had to turn down a lot of projects after that, and I still do. I didn’t want to play that kind of character because one of the biggest problems in our industry is typecasting.”
