ANCWL calls for a harsher sentence for Enyobeni tavern owners

The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Eastern Cape says they are not satisfied with the sentence handed down to Enyobeni tavern owners, Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu, at the East London Regional Court on Friday.

The couple was fined R5 000 or 100 days in prison after they were found guilty of selling liquor to minors.

This follows the death of 21 youngsters at Enyobeni tavern in Scenery Park, East London in June 2022.

Court has ‘failed’ to hold the owners accountable

ANCWL Provincial Secretary Siphokazi Mani said the sentencing falls short of serving as a meaningful deterrent.

“The ANCWL views this sentence as inadequate, failing to reflect the gravity of the tragedy and the responsibility that lies with the establishment’s owners.

The ANCWL stands in unwavering solidarity with the affected families, who continue to grapple with the profound loss of their loved ones.

It is our considered view that the court’s failure to compel the owners to take full responsibility for the events leading to this tragedy is deeply troubling,” she said.

Mani said it is crucial for the legal system to play a meaningful role in bringing closure to those affected by such senseless tragedies.

“The ANCWL insists that justice should not only be blind but also resolute in holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially when they result in such devastating consequences.

Our expectation is for the courts to consider the impact on the affected families and the broader community when determining sentences in cases of this nature.

We remain committed to supporting the affected families and advocating for justice that truly reflects the severity of the situation.

We call on the relevant authorities to reevaluate the sentencing and ensure that justice is not only served but is seen to be served,” she said.

A formal inquest into the deaths of 21 young people at the Enyobeni tavern is still set to be heard at the Mdantsane Regional Court.
