An eye-opening new poll for President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign suggests that Biden is struggling to meet benchmarks even in states where he has an enormous, built-in partisan advantage.
According to a new survey of New York from Siena College, Biden boasts just a 12-point lead (48%-36%) over former President and likely Republican nominee Donald Trump in the Empire State. While the results hardly indicate that Biden is in any danger of losing New York, it does speak to his unpopularity and the lack of enthusiasm for him across the country. A little over three years ago, Biden sailed to victory over Trump in the state by a little over 23%.
There are more warning signs for Biden in the crosstabs. The incumbent would lose independents by 12 points, the historically Democratic Jewish population by 9, and only manages to tie Trump (39%-39%) in the suburbs, where the Republican performed poorly in 2020.

Siena’s poll is just one in a string of poor polls for Biden, who trails Trump nationally according to the RealClearPolitics average, and in polls from a variety of swing states likely to decide the election.
Although Biden triumphed by 4.5% in the 2020 popular vote, his Electoral College victory was won on the basis of his much smaller margins of victory in states like Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.

Surveys conducted in those states late last month by Bloomberg and Morning Consult found that Trump would beat Biden in every single one of those states in a 2024 rematch, including by eight in Nevada and Georgia, five in Wisconsin and Michigan, and three in Pennsylvania and Arizona.
