Hong Kong’s culture scene is abuzz with activities in the lead-up to the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo – an international showcase of the city’s status as a cultural hub – that runs from October 14 to 18.
Here are some of the highlights of an arts-filled weekend.
1. Opera Hong Kong: Turandot
To commemorate the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, Opera Hong Kong is presenting five performances of the composer’s opera Turandot from October 10 to 13 at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
The Italian opera, known for the soaring aria Nessun dorma, is set in China even though its story, of a cold-hearted princess who asks all male suitors to answer three riddles or die, may be of ancient Persian origin.
Turandot, Opera Hong Kong, Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Oct 10-12, 7.30pm, Oct 12, 13, 3pm. Tickets available from Urbtix.
2. Hong Kong Dance Company: After Snowfall
The title After Snowfall comes from the famous letters to his friends sent by China’s best-known calligrapher, Wang Xizhi, more than 1,600 years ago.
